The children made these superb elephants using junk art, felt and paint to celebrate the Sri Lankan festival. The festival involves beautifully decorated elephants parading around the city of Kandy.
The festival of the Buddha’s tooth takes place each year, on the night of August full moon, in the city of Kandy in Sri Lanka. A procession of beautifully decorated elephants parade around the city carrying a golden casket which contains a very special relic-the tooth of the Buddha. This is said to have been snatched from the Buddha’s funeral pyre and is normally kept in a nearby temple. The festival is a time of great celebration, with dancing and fireworks in the streets.
