The Art curriculum aims to provide opportunities for children and young people to develop the skills needed to express ideas and feelings, record observations and design and make images and sculptures. Our Art curriculum is accessible to all and personalised according to individual need and preference. The school has an artist in residence and a potter. Children have access to a wide range of creative opportunities, including pottery, sculpture, oil painting, printmaking and collage. We also provide an enriched creative arts programme, which includes music and poetry workshops, storytelling and visiting theatre and dance groups. Students have regular opportunities to work with professional artists, and we have run a series of successful partnership projects with organisations such as the National Gallery and the National Portrait Gallery. We display students’ art work around all of our hospital sites, both in and around our teaching spaces, and around the hospitals as well (we currently have an exhibition of students’ work on ‘The Bridge’ at the Royal Brompton Hospital) and we have formed excellent relationships with hospital arts organisations such as RBH Arts and Hospital Arts at Chelsea and Westminster hospital) and our students are regularly involved in collaborative projects between the schools and the arts teams. In addition, students regularly have opportunities to enter competitions and display work in a variety of different settings. Students’ work has been displayed at Leighton House Museum as part of an international arts project which involved students from our school and students from schools in Gaza. Art therapy is also offered to students.
