Drama

Drama and Drama therapy is offered within the school timetable. This is a measure of the importance that the school places on these activities as part of a Healthy school's Programme. Drama involves an active approach within a safe, non-judgemental, fun environment. Children have the opportunity to create and enact their stories, which may or may not relate to themselves. This context gives them permission to explore dilemmas and to problem solve issues through metaphor. This process offers the possibility of achieving catharsis. It can contribute to restoring a sense of autonomy to the child, who within the inevitable unpredictability of hospital may experience stress through disorientation, powerlessness, change of self-image, and separation issues. On the positive side, a degree of resiliency may be discovered that students were unaware they possessed, providing strength in the acknowledgement of discovering new ways of thinking and behaving. Not only can the Drama activities bring a reduction in feelings of isolation they can widen the range of vocal and physical expressive skills which will improve self-confidence and assertiveness. These are important qualities which help children when they are returning to their regular schools. Students regularly have the opportunity to go on theatre trips and visits and to engage with professional performances.
