Michelle, Shaun and Marie  attended the recent HOPE Congress in Bucharest

 Together for education

CCHS teachers Michelle, Shaun and Marie attended the recent HOPE Congress in Bucharest. This was organised by the P.A.V.E.L. Association and the Association of Teachers and Educators working in Hospitals (Romanian network of the Professionals in the field of Hospital School). More than 200 participants from 27 different countries attended this congress from 4th - 8th of November. The main theme of the Congress was "Together for a better education of sick children and adolescents. Preparing pedagogues to work in a multidisciplinary team in hospitals”. What was particularly inspiring about this conference was that currently there is no legislation to support the education of children in hospital, and the current provision is completely financed by charitable donations.

Three days consisting of 15 workshops, eight key note speakers, 12 plenary sessions, poster presentations and non-stop networking with colleagues from all over the world made for a lively, varied and humbling experience. The commitment and dedication of the staff and charities that provide an education and play service to children and young people in hospital is so very evident. We are all too aware of the cut backs that every public service up and down the UK is experiencing, that said in comparison to our colleagues in Eastern Europe countries we are still extremely well resourced in every respect. The aim of all 27 countries that participated in the Congress was to help Romania create a model of hospital education by signing a petition of support for this model and presenting to the Ministry of National Education in Romania.

Shaun Dolan from CCHS presented a workshop called The Art of Participation”. I know it might be biased, but this was one of, if not the highlight of the workshop sessions. The practical involvement of the audience, along with the range of projects featured by Shaun, and the unveiling of the ‘Bully Free’ project encouraging a continued involvement with the workshop when HOPE members all disperse back to their own settings in their own countries, created such a positive workshop. There was a real sense of purpose, energy and a commitment to continuing with this project that was palpable. Well done Shaun!

Lastly Michelle Sellers has now taken on the role of Committee Member for HOPE for the UK. Michelle recently spoke at the Hospital Head Teachers conference in London about her experience of the conference which was very well received.
